The Helping Older People's Project hosted a consultation event, on Tuesday 28th of April, to  focus attention on the transport needs of local older people.  Drawing on information collected during a social audit, the workers identified transport as one of the major challenges facing older people.  To ensure that older people's views were heard by policy makers and those tasked with advising local government the workers invited Terry Butler (Access Manager Translink), Dame Joan Harbison (Older People's Advocate), Michael Lorimer (Executive Secretary IMTAC), Gavin Hamilton (Department of Regional Development) and Janet Watson (Department of Regional Development) to the event.

Title: Transport Matters
Description: The Helping Older People’s Project hosted a conference on Tuesday 28th of April in the Millennium Court Arts Centre to discuss the transport needs of local older people. Representatives from local groups including Pensioners Actively Lobbying Servcies (PALS) and the Golden Millennium Club informed Translink, the Department of Regional Development and Dame Joan Harbison, the Older People’s Advocate, on the local issues that affect the mobility of their members.
The need for a discussion on transport was identified from the responses to the social audit conducted with older people’s groups at the start of the project where all groups identified it as one of the major issues facing them. The workers on the project are extremely grateful to Philomena Mulholland Gallagher Coordinator of Craigavon and Banbridge Aging Well Network and Michael Lorimer Executive Secretary of the Inclusive Mobility and Transport Advisory Committee (IMTAC) for all their help and support with organising the conference.
We have been assured by both the Older People’s Advocate and IMTAC that any developments resulting from the conference and will be reported back to CNC and we in turn can assure all participants that they will be notified as soon as we hear.
The Helping Older People’s Project is committed to ensuring that older people have the same opportunities as everyone else to travel when and where they want. For further details please contact either Neil or Kathy at Community Network Craigavon on 02838 392777.
