HOP - Tackling Isolation
Opportunities to participate and make a positive contribution are integral to an older person's health and wellbeing. Older people's groups provide an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded people, develop knowledge and learn new skills. A list of older people's groups currently operating across the borough of Craigavon is provided below.
Factors that may lead to social isolation include bereavement, retirement and poor health and the project is therefore actively involved in the Southern Area Older People Mental Health Forum and the Older People's Policy Forum. The project was also instrumental in developing the Upper Bann University of the Third Age (U3A), a self-help organisation for local people no longer in full time employment providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. The U3A approach to learning is - learning for pleasure. There is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained.

Title: U3A Communication and Teambuilding Workshop Description: The Upper Bann University of the Third Age (U3A) organised a ‘Communication and Team Building Workshop’ on Thursday 12th of November at the Lurgaboy Adventure Centre in Markethill. From the outset, this recently formed group recognised the importance of team work and effective communication in achieving its overall aims and worked with the staff of the Helping Older Peoples Project to develop a range of exercises and activities to challenge and develop its member’s skills in these areas. This workshop proved to be a rewarding experience for all concerned and feedback gathered during an evaluation can be best summarised by a quote from Betty who stated ‘I had my misgivings about coming but I now feel very inspired to think about some goals that I had been very hesitant about setting. All the activities were great fun.’
U3As are self-help, self-managed lifelong learning co-operatives for older people no longer in full time work, providing opportunities for their members to share learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups and to pursue learning not for qualifications, but for fun. The Upper Bann U3A aims: • To encourage and enable local older people to help each other to share their knowledge, skills, interests and experience. • To demonstrate the benefits and enjoyment to be gained and the new horizons to be discovered in learning throughout life • To celebrate the capabilities and potential of local older people and their value to society.
